A tractor trundles past, towing a bin overflowing with grapes from the harvest. Stunning. I sip the wine. Smooth. Full-bodied. Delicious. It must be great to be a wine farmer and be able to make wine and then enjoy the fruits of your harvest. Yet, the planning, effort, commitment, endless hours, and investment are not seen in the glass of wine. We can enjoy the wine, but it was only made possible because of tireless dedication. If the farmer stopped after planting, there would be no harvest. If the farmer stopped after pruning, there would be no harvest. If the farmer stopped after fertilising, there would be no harvest. The farmer has to keep going until the end to reap the reward. There are no shortcuts to enjoying the fruits of the harvest. The same applies to our work in God’s vineyard. “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9). Sometimes doing good is easy when those around us a kind and happy. Yet other times, it’s difficult when we are tired or when people are unkind. But the good news is I “can do all things through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). So, today, strengthened by Jesus, look for an opportunity to do good, for soon we will reap the ultimate reward – being part of the harvest of Jesus.
