Creative power

Every day, within minutes of waking up, you will use your greatest power – a power to create or crush, help or harm, delight or depress – with the words that you speak. God set the example at the waking of our universe. “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3). God used words to create and bring life. His words brought the entire universe into being. John picks up on this and starts his gospel using the same theme but now applying it to Jesus – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…Through him all things were made” (John 1:1-3) and then in verse 14 we read that “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14). God’s Word literally became the living Jesus. And in like manner the words Jesus spoke were creating, life giving words – “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). And so we too are called to use our words to help and create. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29). What will you create in the lives of others with your words today?
