Don’t look back!

Don’t look back!

When people first met Jesus, they were drawn by His words, His power, His kindness. Many wanted to follow, but few understood what that actually meant. Luke 9 records three encounters. One man promises, “I’ll follow You wherever You go,” but Jesus replies, “The Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” Another asks to first bury his father. A third says, “I will follow You, Lord, but first let me say goodbye.” To all of them, Jesus replies with a truth that slices straight to the heart: “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). It’s a vivid image – a farmer trying to plough a straight line while glancing over his shoulder. The result is crooked, wasted effort. Jesus was showing that discipleship cannot be divided. You cannot move forward while looking back. We say, “I’ll follow You, Lord, but first let me finish this project… get through this season… fix myself.” But Jesus never invited partial devotion. He called for undivided hearts, eyes fixed forward. Following Him will cost comfort, predictability, even control. But what’s surrendered isn’t lost—it’s planted, growing into something eternal.
