Bogged down

“Let’s cycle it,” my son suggests. Usually, this would be a great idea, but he’s suggesting we cycle South Africa’s longest beach, 16-Mile Beach. “It’s 26 kilometres of sand with unknown challenges”, I say. “Yes,” he replies, “that will make it extra fun for our video channel.” So, we set out, hoping the tides, sand, wind, and an exit point would all work out. The first half is amazing—strong tailwind, hard sand, stunning views. Then things change. The tide begins to turn, and the sand gets really soft. Even with our e-bikes, we struggle. The sand bogs us down, our batteries deplete, and we end up walking and running with the bikes. Exhausted, we finally drag our bikes up to the end. It was beautiful, but the thick sand nearly stopped us from reaching our goal. Life can be like this—everything going smoothly until we hit thick sand. David cries, “I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold” (Psalms 69:2). Life can overwhelm us, and we can’t move forward. What can we do? Like David, call to God, and he will answer: “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (Psalms 40:2).
