Sometimes my wife and I run to a point and then turn around. Occasionally, I run a little extra before turning back, but this makes it nearly impossible to catch up to her. While I run an extra minute, she’s running the other way, making us two minutes apart. It feels like I’ll never catch up. Sometimes our relationship with God feels the same. We walk away from Him, and when we decide to turn back, the distance seems too far. We think we’ve been going the wrong way for too long. However, the story of the Prodigal Son teaches us differently. When the son turns back to his father, he must have felt the same. Yet, “while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion… he ran to his son” (Luke 15:20). The father wasn’t going in the opposite direction; instead, he ran toward his son. This is how God’s forgiveness works—He runs to meet us even while we are still far off.
