“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:1-2). In this opening scene of the Bible, we see intense darkness. Darkness beyond imagining. There is no sun, no stars, no moon – no light at all. But, above this hopeless, lifeless, lightless space, God’s Spirit hovers. Waits. God’s infinite power and promise hover and wait above this nothingness. And so, too, there was a darkness, a great spiritual darkness upon the whole earth as Jesus was crucified and placed inside a dark tomb. The light of the world was gone. For his disciples, there was utter despair. Their darkness was beyond words. But God’s Spirit hovered, waiting to perform the greatest miracle of all time. We, too, can find ourselves in this dark place, where it seems God’s light has gone, where the world is a place of utter despair. But know this – the Spirit of God is hovering, waiting above our nothingness. God’s eternal power, his unbreakable promise, his unstoppable light is coming. Jesus is coming. He will shine. He will rise. He will rise in your life. Wait, it’s all going to change. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5).
