Bees have a single, focused mission: collect nectar and make honey. They are drawn irresistibly to anything sweet – which is what makes them such prolific pollinators. But there is something quietly tragic about a bee that drowns in the very honey it spent its life making. The thing it desired most becomes the thing that destroys it. The Bible captures this paradox with striking simplicity: "If you find honey, eat just enough – too much of it, and you will vomit." (Proverbs 25:16). What is your honey? Food, social media, money, career, entertainment, travel – the honey pots are many. In moderation these things may be fine, but in excess the very sweetness we sought replaces joy with despair. Jesus warned plainly, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions." (Luke 12:15). He then told of a rich man who tore down his barns to build bigger ones, only for God to say, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you." (Luke 12:20). The pursuit of honey is not itself the problem – it is the pursuit for self alone that destroys. True happiness is not found in hoarding the honey; it is found in sharing it with the hive, honoring God with what you have been given, and bringing sweetness into the lives of others. (Craig B).
