Can you help me?

When you're asked to help – with your time or your possessions – what do you say? Do you weigh whether you can spare the hours, or worry your things might get broken? We've all had those moments of selfishness, not wanting to share. I think of the time Jesus was preaching and faced a crowd of five thousand men, plus women and children, all hungry (Luke 9:10). The disciples suggested sending them away for food, but somehow five loaves and two fishes appeared – someone's packed lunch, shared unselfishly. Jesus took that small gift, prayed to His Heavenly Father, and fed everyone there, with plenty left over. That humble offering allowed the whole crowd to stay and hear the good news Jesus was preaching. You will sometimes say, do, or give something – maybe small, maybe large – that demonstrates your love for our Heavenly Father, and that is a demonstration of belief in Him. Everything we have is a gift from God, on loan until His kingdom is established on earth. As James reminds us, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change" (James 1:17).
