Gaming destructive instincts

We have two Pekingese who are best friends. They love playing and sleeping together. Yet, sometimes they spontaneously combust into a blur of fur and teeth. The reason is usually food. Their instinct to hoard overrides everything, even friendship. We are not too dissimilar. Deep-rooted emotions often erupt despite our rational thinking. Fear, anger, envy, or pride can damage our relationships even when we know the consequences. Paul admits: “For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate… I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out” (Romans 7:15, 18–19). How can we control these destructive instincts? We can’t. But God can. “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). Unlike animals, we have access to God’s Spirit. He offers to do for us what we cannot. Rather than trying harder to overcome these vices, try God—let Him be your “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
