The Bible: 2. In the beginning

The Bible: 2. In the beginning

“In the beginning God…” and the rest are details. Important details, because they include us. God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending (Revelation 1:8). Everything is contained within Him. Just as planet Earth floats in the vastness of endless space, so the words of Scripture exist within the vastness of an eternal God. “For in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). The Bible opens with, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This introduces two themes that run through all of Scripture. First, God as the start, author, and power of everything. Second, “heaven and earth” – God and humans, divine and natural, unseen and seen, eternal and temporary, faith and works. It’s the story of God wanting to make His home with us. The story begins in Genesis and culminates in Revelation when heaven and earth become one (Revelation 21:1-3). God created Earth, beautiful beyond compare, a place for life to flourish. Into this He placed Adam and Eve, His special creation with free will. And with this gift He gave them the most important choice of all – to worship God or self. What will you choose?
