We naturally want to build things in our lives, whether metaphorically or literally. We build careers, relationships, and even houses. In order to build, we plan, sacrifice, and put in a lot of energy. Anything truly of value takes time, energy, and often significant financial investment. Most people are willing to do this when something matters to them. But the question is, are we prepared to do the same for God? In the book of Haggai, the people of Israel had returned from exile and were focused on rebuilding their own lives. They invested in their homes and personal comfort, yet neglected the rebuilding of God’s temple, which still lay in ruins. It is into this situation that God speaks: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” (Haggai 1:4). The issue was not that building their own homes was wrong, but that their priorities were misplaced. They had time, energy, and resources for themselves, but not for what mattered to God. Take a moment to reflect on your own life, your priorities, and sacrifices. How much is for God, for others, and how much for you? (Craig B) Open Bible – bit.ly/hag1v4
