The fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, ran 100 metres in 9.58 seconds. The fastest person to run a half marathon of 21.1 km is Jacob Kiplimo in a crazy fast 56 minutes and 42 seconds. And the fastest man to run 30 km is Eliud Kipchoge in 1 hour and 27 minutes. These are incredible athletic achievements held by three remarkable athletes. But they are not the actual world records. The actual world records for all three of these distances are held by one man—Elijah. We read, “The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab (who was racing on a chariot) all the way to Jezreel” (1 Kings 18:46). Based on the distance of about 30 km and the speed of a racing chariot of roughly 40 km/h, Elijah ran 100 metres in 8 seconds—1.58 seconds faster than Usain Bolt—and kept this pace for 300 consecutive 100 metre races, setting a half marathon time of 28 minutes and a 30 km time of just 40 minutes. Astounding. All because of the power of God. And this same power is available to us. “God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak…those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength…they will run and not grow weary” (Isaiah 40:28–31). Now if God can do this for us physically, imagine the energy and strength he can give us on our spiritual race of life. Run in His power.
