Five thousand people had just enjoyed a miraculous meal of fish and barley loaves made from two small fish and five loaves. The next day, they desperately searched for Jesus. His message to them is essential for us as well: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (John 6:27). Their next question is a question which is on our hearts too, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent” (John 6:28-29). Salvation is a gift of grace, and Jesus opened the way to eternal life. All God asks is for us to entrust our spiritual well-being to Christ completely. “For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:8-10). Our works are not our own, it’s Christ in action through you. When people see your good works, they see God and glorify our Father in Heaven.
