Sin at the Door, Defeated

God warned Cain, "If you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." (Genesis 4:7) Cain's anger was not harmless – it became an open door, and sin was waiting to take control. Romans 6 shows what has changed for those who belong to Christ. We are no longer helpless slaves to sin; through Jesus, sin's authority has been broken. Paul therefore says, "Do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires." (Romans 6:12) Sin may still tempt us, but it no longer has the right to rule us. Grace does not mean sin no longer matters, it means we have been given a new Master and a new power to obey Him. Every day we choose what we present ourselves to. Our thoughts, words, eyes, hands, and desires can become instruments of sin, or they can be surrendered to God as instruments of righteousness. The gospel is not merely that Jesus forgives our sin, it is also that Jesus sets us free from its dominion. You may still face temptation, but you are no longer its slave. Sin may lie at the door, but in Christ it does not have to enter and reign. "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36). (Nicky B).
