Recently, we were involved in building a small wooden cabin. Since it’s near the coast, I checked with the builder to ensure he was using stainless steel nails that wouldn’t rust. Initially, it seemed he had. However, after a few months, it became clear that only some of the external cladding nails were stainless steel. Though they looked the same at first, some began to rust, and over time, they will perish. We face a similar choice in life—what type of “nail” will we use to attach ourselves to life? Typically, we choose human nails—money, intellect, power. Yet, no matter how strong they seem, these “nails” will rust, and we will lose our grip on life. There is only one nail that binds eternally—Jesus. He is the only sinless one and the only one who can attach us eternally to life. He has “taken away our sins, nailing them to the cross” (Colossians 2:14). So, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy…but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19-20).
