The priest’s gift

The priest’s gift

“What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:3). It’s one of the greatest promises of God, that we are counted as righteous in his sight. But, it is also one of the greatest conundrums. Does this mean I don’t need to live righteously because I already am? One way to understand this is through the lens of marriage. A priest pronounces a couple husband and wife. Now, in God’s sight they are married regardless of what they may do. However, there is still the requirement that they live as a married couple. Lives of love, devotion, sacrifice and commitment. Yet, even if they fail they remain in God’s sight as married. Having been declared married what greater calling than to live as married. This is the same for righteousness. Jesus, our priest (Hebrews 4:14) pronounced us as righteous because of his sacrifice (Romans 3:22). Now, in God’s sight, regardless of what we do, we are righteousness. However, there is still the requirement that we live as righteous children of God. We need to live lives that show we are righteous. Lives of love, devotion, sacrifice and commitment. Yet, even if we fail we remain in God’s sight as righteous (Romans 4:8). Having been declared righteous what greater calling than to live as righteous. What a gift. What a responsibility.
