Recently, I woke up at 3 a.m. and then battled to fall asleep. Despite all my best efforts, my brain wouldn’t switch off. The problem is that the more we try to fall asleep, the longer we stay awake. It is only when we let go of our trying that sleep finally comes. It seems like this is not too dissimilar to how we try and live our lives. We want to be in control, directing our lives how we want. We want to control all our plans, tasks and steps. However, we often find that despite all our trying, life just won’t go how we want. Much like we can’t control our sleep, we can’t control our lives. In Proverbs 16:9, we read: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” Rather than being frustrated or anxious about our lack of control, this should be the most comforting thought possible – knowing God is always in control. “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24). Today, if your efforts don’t seem to be working, rejoice, knowing that God is in control of every detail. Rest in His peace.
