Finding yourself in a foreign country where nobody speaks your language can be daunting. Despite attempts to communicate in your language, it feels as though your words are falling on deaf ears (and vice versa). It’s strange how our words lose their significance when the listener does not understand them. This situation reminds me of the Tower of Babel, where the Lord said, “If these people are united and speak the same language, nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Let’s confuse their language so they cannot understand each other.” The Babylonians wanted to make a name for themselves by building a tower reaching to the heavens. The result was God confused their words, and they got scattered. This story reflects our lives in many ways, as we often use our words to try and build a name for ourselves rather than bring God glory. However, this will lead to confused and wandering lives. Instead, use your words as Psalm 19:14 beautifully expresses it – “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” How will you use the gift of language today – to build your tower or God’s love?
