Here’s a secret. It’s human nature that we want to do things for ourselves. It’s not long before a baby learns to crawl and starts the journey of self-reliance. Yet as we navigate life, we soon learn that there are many things we simply can’t do. Things that are outside of our ability and strength. It’s then that we are forced to rely on others. Yet, often it’s not even other people who can help us, and then we are left with two options – despair or rely on God. And so, it’s often in these situations that we finally turn to God and witness an ability and strength beyond our comprehension. It’s then that we realise the impact of what Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13). Paul was talking about living through life’s shifting times – “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” (Philippians 4:12). The “secret” is doing “all things” – celebrations and challenges, times of plenty and times of little, in Jesus’ strength.
