Awakening in the dark to find water knee-deep around your bed is very scary. With torrential rain outside, no way of escape and the possibility of the river bursting its banks, there is real danger. I sit with an emergency lamp on, watching the water slowly rising and listening to the downpour. Fear, despair, and anxiety keep me wide awake. Next to me, my wife is listening to Psalms through her AirPods. In no time, she is asleep despite the raging storm and rising water. I am reminded of Jesus in a boat in a storm with his disciples. “Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.” (Matthew 8:24). Asleep in a dangerous storm, he rests in the divine peace given by God. (Galatians 5:22). But his disciples are afraid. They don’t access God’s peace that transcends understanding and circumstances (Philippians 4:7). They don’t have faith. “The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” (Matthew 8:25). My prayer, the same as the desperate man who met Jesus – “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).
