This is astounding. The average person in their lifetime consumes about 200,000 kilograms of food – that’s equivalent to a herd of 20 elephants. We consume 1 million litres of water – about 400 swimming pools. We consume 100,000 megawatt hours of energy – equivalent to powering a smartphone for about 450,000 years. We consume 500 metric tons of materials – equivalent to the volume of a three-story building. That’s an incredible about of consumption. The big question is, with all this consumption, what do we produce with our lives? By default, we all go through life consuming, but God created us for more than this. He made us to produce and create. He created us to multiply and share. After telling a story about a person given many resources with the instruction to use them for others, Jesus concludes by saying, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked” (Luke 12:48). How incredibly abundantly most of us have received. And so, having received much, how much will you give of your money, time, energy, and possessions for God and others?
