Keeping the fire burning

Keeping the fire burning

Sometimes it’s the simple things that make the most impact. I was listening to a message on God’s purpose, and the speaker shared a powerful, practical image. When making a braai (barbecue for non-South Africans), the best method is to light the fire starter and pile all the charcoal on top. If a piece of charcoal rolls away- even if it’s started to burn – it will likely die out. But if you add it back next to the others, it catches flame again and burns brightly. The same is true for our spiritual lives. When we surround ourselves with others who burn with passion for God, that fire spreads to us. But when we isolate ourselves, our flame fades. Solomon wrote, “Two are better than one”, and then he continues – and he must’ve been braaing, because he says, “Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–11). This is why we are warned to “not neglect our meeting together” (Hebrews 10:25). Church, community, and fellowship are essential – not just for ourselves, but for the fire we help ignite in others. So how is your flame burning for God, and what impact are you having on others?
