Recently, I watched a mass of enthusiastic people plunge into a dam and, in a froth of splashes, head out to swim a mile. As I watched, I thought how amazing it is that humans, who aren’t fish, can swim so far. But, regardless of how good you are, swimming still requires one thing – you have to keep moving. If you stop moving, you will soon sink. Peter experienced an extreme version of this when he did what no other human besides Jesus had done – he walked on water for a few steps. But when he stopped moving and “he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30). It’s the same for us in life. We find ourselves swimming in a sea of change and uncertainty. Sometimes it’s calm. Sometimes it’s stormy. But whatever the conditions, we must keep swimming, or we will sink. Yet, sometimes, we can’t carry on. But when that happens, if we call out, “Lord, save me,” we will experience a miracle. “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.“ (Matthew 14:31).
