Have you heard the story of the whale and the worm? In the story of Jonah, Jonah attempts to run away from God. God had instructed him to warn the people of Nineveh, an enemy city, that if they didn’t change their evil ways, they would be destroyed. Caught in a storm on a ship, he is thrown overboard. Sinking into the depths of the sea, God prepared a whale that swallowed him. And in this darkest place, he finds God’s grace. In the face of disobedience, God provided the whale as a means of salvation and a way to bring him back to his divine mission. Nineveh repents after Jonah warns them, which upsets him as God’s wrath won’t fall on them. Sulking under the shade of a tree, God prepared a worm that destroyed the tree, leaving Jonah in the searing heat, ending the story with a question – “Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?” (Jonah 4:11). Whether it’s a big whale moment of grace or a worm moment of perspective that God prepares for you, know that God cares for everyone.
