It’s not the end

It’s not the end

We awoke yesterday morning to hear the sad news that a mighty oak tree had fallen. A giant of faith and example. We his children and sons-in-law have lived in the comfort of his mighty shadow. We have looked up in awe at his towering example of love, dedication, and kindness. But now there is a great hole in the canopy of our lives where this mighty tree once stood. Yet now the light of heaven shines down—a light towards which he always grew. God’s light of love shines into all our lives, reminding us Dedda is not gone. It was Jesus who gave the most amazing words of comfort, even using Dedda’s name, Abraham, when he said, “But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraam, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living” (Matthew 22:31–32). In God’s eternity Dedda is not gone, he lives. His resurrection is assured. It’s not a hole he has left—it’s a light he has revealed. The light of God, of hope, of life evermore. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).
