House in Ruins

House in Ruins

“You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!” (Haggai 1:6). Have you ever felt like this – where everything you do isn’t working? All your efforts amount to nothing. God warned his people thousands of years ago that this is how they would experience life. A life that is never satisfied or fulfilled. But what was the issue? He tells them – “Why? Because my house lies in ruins, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine houses” (Haggai 1:9). God is telling us that spending our time and energy building our own house and not his house will never result in a satisfying life. We are called to build our relationship with God; this is our ultimate purpose. To create a house in our lives that gives him glory, and then we will experience true fulfilment. “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:5).
