A long time ago, there was a family who lived in the land of Canaan. One of the sons was the dad’s favourite. His brothers envied and hated him for this. They wanted to kill him but instead sold him as a slave to Egypt. Here life was terrible. He was falsely accused of a crime and imprisoned for many years. He was finally released after he interpreted a dream for Pharaoh. This resulted in him being promoted to second in command in Egypt. His family came to Egypt to escape a famine. Yet when he saw them, he had no bitterness towards them. He treated them kindly. When his father died, the brothers thought he would now seek revenge, but instead, Joseph said, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. (Gen 50:19-21). When your family or others are unkind to you, do you respond with lifelong anger, or are you like Joseph, who saw everything, good and bad, as God working in his life? Joseph treated everyone, even those who treated him poorly, with love and kindness. This type of love is only possible when we put God in the centre of our life every day.
