It was the year 841 BC. Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, had mercilessly killed all the king’s sons and reigned as Queen over Judah. But Jehoiada, the priest, hid one son, Joash. Jehoiada cared for Joash, anointed him as king at the age of seven, and brought him up in the way of God. During Jehoiada’s lifetime, King Joash did what was right in the eyes of God, destroying idols and turning the hearts of the people back to Him. However, after Jehoiada’s death, something tragic happened. “They abandoned the temple of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and worshipped Asherah poles and idols” (2 Chronicles 24:18). Joash even called for the stoning of Zechariah, son of Jehoiada when he warned them about their evil practices. The lesson is powerful. We may start strong and fully committed to serving God, but if we stop praying, meeting with fellow believers, or reading God’s Word, it will have tragic consequences. Let us “not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhort one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).
