Fear and harmony

Fear and harmony

While on a walking safari, I noticed how differently animals behave when we’re on foot. Even from far away, they would flee. Yet when in a vehicle, we could get much closer. This instinctual fear is something God placed in them after the flood: “All the animals of the earth…will look on you with fear and terror” (Genesis 9:1-2). It may feel sad not to connect more closely, but this distance protects both animals and humans. In Eden, it wasn’t this way. Animals lived in harmony with people—so much so that they came to Adam to be named (Genesis 2:19-20). And this harmony will return. The Bible promises a restored world where “the wolf and the lamb will live together…and a little child will lead them all” (Isaiah 11:6). A beautiful reminder that while fear defines now, peace will define forever. Are you longing for that world?
