Drinking to the gods

Drinking to the gods

He was the king of the greatest nation, Babylon. Life was lived on his terms – until God spoke. “You, Belshazzar, have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honoured the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!” (Daniel 5:23). That night, Belshazzar would be killed (Daniel 5:30). Yet what about us? We are the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:16). Who do we praise in our temple? Who do we devote our time and attention to? Our favourite sports team, our career, fashion, money, success? Belshazzar and his friends were revelling and drinking wine out of goblets from the temple of God while praising gods of silver, gold, iron, wood, and bronze – gods that could not see or hear them. We may think it’s ridiculous worshipping unseeing gods. Yet aren’t our gods the same? Does the sports team we worship, influencer we follow, money we chase – gods we devote so much time to, see, hear, or know anything about us? They don’t know or care that we exist. Yet just like  Belshazzar, when we honour these gods over the living God, we dishonour our Creator.  Let us think prayerfully about the gods we worship, who we devote our love and attention to. Turn your heart to your Heavenly Father – He who sees you, loves you, gives you life, and controls your destiny. Open Bible – https://bit.ly/dan5v23, https://bit.ly/2co6v16, https://bit.ly/dan5v30
