His name was Louis Washkansky. It was 1967. It had never been done before, but Dr Christiaan Barnard would attempt to do the seemingly impossible – give Louis a new heart. Against all odds, the operation was a success. He had life with a new heart, at least for 18 days, before he died of pneumonia. However, this wasn’t the first heart transplant, God has been doing heart transplants for thousands of years. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26). God was speaking to the nation of Israel who was living scattered among the nations who had conquered them. They had forgotten him and chosen idols instead. Yet still, He promises to change their heart and restore them. We, too, may be living separated from God, dedicating our lives to the idols of this world – fame, fortune, possessions, sports, fashion, power…Yet God offers to give us a new heart. He is offering to perform a change in us, the result of which is even more astounding than Louis’ heart transplant. He is offering to pour his Spirit into you, remove your hard, dead heart, and let you experience life – real life, powered by Him. Are you ready for a new heart and a new life?
