Ascending the massive dune is exhausting, but the views are spectacular atop Big Daddy in Namibia, which rises 325 meters in height. Standing at the bottom, a person climbing the dune looks like a speck compared to this huge pile of sand. I can imagine the sand grains on the pinnacle thinking, “We are the most important. We are at the top of the heap!” Yet, those grains did nothing to reach the top. The dunes are the story of the wind written in the sand of the desert. It’s the wind’s power that shifted the sand. Soon the sand at the top will fall down the side as the dunes shift and move at the will of the wind. So too, for the human grains of sand and their seemingly mighty sand empires. It’s God who raises and deposes human leaders for his ends. Empires are the story of God written in the dust of humanity. “He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.” (Daniel 2:21). So, no matter how big and powerful people or empires may seem, know “That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, (and) Gives it to whomever He will” (Daniel 4:17).
