Do you ever read some of the stories in the Old Testament and think the ancient anecdotes are outdated in our modern world? Like the Israelites worshipping a golden calf near Mt Sinai (Exodus 32:8) – a physical golden calf seems irrelevant today, as things like smartphones and social media become the new symbols for idolatry. However, sometimes we are reminded that we aren’t so different after all, that God’s patterns of truth continue today and his Word endures forever. Take a look at what is just outside the New York Stock Exchange, the world’s biggest stock exchange and symbol of economic power and money – a massive sculpture of a bronze bull, nicknamed the “Wall Street Bull”. The symbol and story of the golden calf may be more relevant today than ever. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(Matthew 6:24).
