Crime. Corruption. War. Inflation. Violence. Disasters. Envy. Intolerance. Disease. These are the topics that fill the news and our social media feeds every day, and they increasingly shape our conversations too. We are quick to talk about how bad things are, quick to share the latest bad news, quick to complain, quick to despair. Yet if we truly are people of faith, who believe what our God has said, these very things should draw a very different response from us. Jesus spoke about all of this unfolding on the earth. He said it would become so severe that “People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth” (Luke 21:26). And then he says, “So when all these things begin to happen, share the bad news with your friends. Wail and complain for the world is full of evil.” No! That is not what he says. That may be what we are doing but Jesus says something completely different, “So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!” (Luke 21:28). When the news is filled with fear, crime, and darkness, do not amplify it. Do not share it. Look up to heaven instead and pray, “Lord, surely your return is now near”.
