The Tower of Babel tells the tale of how humanity, driven by pride and unified under one language, sought to build a tower to the heavens as a symbol of their greatness rather than God’s greatness. “Come let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves” (Genesis 11:4). This led God to confuse their languages and scatter them across the earth. I now think of AI language models that combine the collective human knowledge database across language and culture, transcending above the individual into collective intelligence. How high will this new intelligence reach? Will God come down in judgment again? This is not a warning against the use of AI but a bite-sized reminder that even what seems to be “new and revolutionary” also falls into the patterns and principles we’ve been taught since Genesis. “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”(Ecclesiastes 1:9).
