Food is not just something we eat for sustenance, but a way to enjoy ourselves, especially with family and friends. Any celebration with others is amplified when we enjoy it with food and drink. Conversation is enriched by the tastes and sense of fulfilment that a meal brings. So it is not surprising that we choose to celebrate most occasions with food and drink. While there is an important symbolic reason why Jesus gave us bread and wine to remember his great sacrifice, there is also a deeply human reason: connection. Jesus could have simply told us to pray, read, and remember his sacrifice. But “He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me…In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.’” (Luke 22:19-20). Jesus invites you to a meal, a time to not only remember, but an immersive, sensory experience with friends. “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24).
