Imagine a world with two options. In the first, you eat whatever you want and get whatever you desire—but you always feel weak, sickly, anxious and sad. In the second, you’re paired with someone and instead of feeding yourself, you feed them. You give them everything they need. And strangely, you feel full—strong, nourished, joyful and at peace. At first it would feel unnatural, giving instead of taking. But soon you’d realise: this second way is better. It’s how we were designed to live. This is exactly what God calls us to in marriage. A relationship built not on self-gain but self-giving. “Husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church.” (Ephesians 5:28-29). Jesus gave us this example by how He loves the church. He gave his entire life. Marriage is a powerful reminder that when we live for others, we truly live. And this doesn’t stop with our spouse—it’s how we should treat our neighbours too. You were made for more than self.
