We recently visited a preserved 19th-century working farm, complete with a blacksmith and metallurgy space. Watching tools made with fire and an anvil reminded me of the verse, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Creating a tool requires friction, heat, and cutting away excess metal. Similarly, living according to God’s word can bring friction—whether with fellow believers as we strive for truth or with the world as we go against its desires. This walk also involves the cutting away of excess. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). When Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden, cherubim guarded the gate with a flaming sword, knowing no one could re-enter without losing a part of themselves. In the New Testament, Jesus, the Word made flesh, is the ultimate judge who looks into our hearts.
