The Old Testament has approximately 60 verses dedicated to Cities of Refuge. Six cities of refuge were strategically located throughout the Promised Land. This ensured that any individual who had unintentionally killed someone could reach a city of refuge within a day’s journey. This was to stop the family who wanted to avenge their loss from killing the person. Once in the city, they were safe but had to stay there until the death of the high priest. However, despite all the details, there is never an example of these cities being used. This silence shouts that the story is only complete in the New Testament. God is our ultimate city of refuge, and Jesus is our ultimate high priest. “Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here…he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:11-12). Having died, Jesus lives forever and redeems all seeking refuge. And so, while the ultimate avenger, sin, pursues us to kill us, we can run to God and be safe forever. “The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).
