Washed clean

Washed clean

It’s a multi-billion dollar industry – creams and lotions to moisturize, protect, and, if possible, rejuvenate ageing skin. For Naaman, an army commander, his skin condition was deadly. He had leprosy – an incurable disease. On hearing about the prophet Elisha, he goes to see him along with his entourage of horses and chariots. This should make a good impact! However, Elisha just sends a messenger telling Naaman to go and wash seven times in the river Jordan. He is enraged that Elisha did not personally appear and has the audacity to suggest he simply dip in the local river! However, it’s his servants who say – “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” (2 Kings 5:13). And so he obeys. “So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.” (2 Kings 5:14). Wow. Not just healing, but his skin has resorted to perfection. God doesn’t ask us to do something great and “worthy” for our cleansing from sin. He simply asks us to wash and be clean, and he will make us perfect through Jesus. “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16). Will you obey? (1 Corinthians 6:11).
