The reflection

The reflection

You’ve been looking forward to this holiday—a week at the mountain beside an alpine lake with mirror-like reflections of the mountains and sky. You arrive, and your expectations are shattered. The lake is brown and muddy, and there are no reflections. A landslide has muddied the usually clear water. This is an insight into how God must feel about us. In Genesis 1, we read, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them….Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good”. (Genesis 1:27,31). But by Genesis 6, we read, “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart” (Genesis 6:5-6). Solomon reflecting on this, wrote, “Truly, this only I have found: That God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.” (Ecclesiastes 7:29). How do we muddy our lives? With greed, hate, envy, quarrelling, deception, gossip, backstabbing, insolence, pride, and disobedience (Romans 1:29-31). God calls us to turn from this behaviour to be washed by Jesus – to receive him into our lives so we can experience his freedom and reflect His glory – “And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” (2 Corinthians 3:18). Turn from your own ways and let the cleaning water of Jesus flow into your life. And then experience the awe as God’s glorious image reflects in you.
