Practicing

Practicing

Watching kite surfers on the ocean, I am blown away, literally in this case, by their skill as they play in the waves. It’s like a dance as they skip across the waves before ramping high into the sky, twisting and twirling before slowly floating down. It would be great to be able to do that. Yet, like anything done well, the reward results from thousands of hours of practice. While there are many sports or skills we might want to learn and commit to, there is only one that has eternal rewards, and that is learning and committing to becoming righteous. “Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.” (1 John 3:7). Becoming righteous is a practice. It requires us to want to be good, and commit our lives to be good, and never give up. However, unlike kite surfing, we have a big advantage. Jesus will work inside us to enable us through him to become righteous (1 Corinthians 1:30). Eventually, for the kite surfer, it’s muscle memory developed through their practice and perseverance that lets him perform. For us, it’s divine memory developed through our practice and Jesus that makes us righteous. And so, let’s never “become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
