One name

One name

The joy and the trials of choosing a name for a baby. There are so many things to consider – the sound of the name, what it means, how easy it is to spell. But, more important than all these is the association of the name. Is it associated with something positive? Is it a reminder of someone we love and admire? A name is a single word that carries a world of meaning and emotions. In Zechariah 14:9, God tells us something important about his name. “The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.” What does this mean? When Moses wanted to see God’s glory, we read that God “proclaimed his name, the LORD…compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:5-6). His glory is his character which is his name. God is promising that the day will come when there will be only one name – God’s name, only one character – God’s character. But the exciting part is that Jesus said, “The one who is victorious..I will write on them the name of my God” (Revelation 3:12). God’s name is a family name. Those who choose Him will be given His divine name – part of one family, one world filled with His divine character. It’s a promise. It’s a choice. Whose family do you choose to belong to?
