Wonderful mess

Wonderful mess

We have a small two-room house in a beautiful coastal area. Its size makes it easy to keep clean, but when our whole family arrives, with baby and dogs, it quickly descends into a chaotic mess. Clothes, mattresses, dishes, and toys turn moving around into an Olympic steeple chase event. The quiet of the vlei is replaced with noisy chatter and busy clatter. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. This is the greatest blessing we could ask for, a house full of family and the sounds of life. Solomon put it perfectly: “Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest” (Proverbs 14:4). The principle is simple: life without effort or mess brings little reward. Your desk will stay neat if you never study. Your kitchen will stay spotless if you never cook. But more importantly, relationships will stay neat and safe if you never open yourself up to others. Yet God calls us to be part of community, to love our neighbours, and to share our lives. It may be messy, but the large harvest is worth it. A harvest of joy, love, and blessing.
