Who are you listening to?

Names are important. They help us communicate and understand the world. If I say “elephant” or “eagle,” you immediately picture them. Adam’s first task from God was to name the animals. Many names are based on the animal’s attributes. For example, “ari” in Hebrew is a lion, signifying strength, and “ze’ev” for wolf, means ravenousness. Interestingly, the snake is named “nachash” – a sound that mimics its hiss. It’s from a root word translated as “enchantment.” This teaches us that while a snake bite is dangerous, its real danger lies in its voice, which lured Adam and Eve to sin. The serpent’s enchanting hiss continues today through the lies that speak to us through social media and other channels. We can easily be enchanted and led astray. But there is “a name above every name” (Philippians 2:9) we should listen to – Jesus. As God said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). His name means saviour, and his words bring life: “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). Choose carefully who you choose to listen to.
