True companionship

True companionship

What does being there for someone else truly mean? The Bible talks about it often, and my favourite verse on this topic is Romans 12:15: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Sometimes, when we are around people who are a constant in our lives over many years, it can be hard to celebrate their success without comparing it to our own lives. We may feel envy, bitterness, or disappointment creeping in. That’s why I love this verse—it reminds us of the level of empathy and love we’re called to have for those around us. To truly “be there” for someone means being just as joyful as they are when life is going well, and just as heartbroken when things fall apart. It means carrying no hidden resentment, but rather holding their best interests close to our hearts. This is the kind of selfless love God wants us to embody. It’s not always easy, but it is powerful. Next time your friend or neighbour is celebrating, celebrate with them. And when they’re hurting, don’t hesitate to show up, listen, comfort, and walk with them. That is being there for someone. And that is what love, the kind Christ calls us to, looks like in action.
