Through the glass door

Through the glass door

I’m seated indoors, warm and content. Through a glass door, I can see someone standing outside. The wind is howling, and its relentless onslaught is battering them. We are only meters apart, but our experiences are vastly different. Isn’t this how we sometimes experience life? We may be comfortable, relaxed, and at peace. We receive a message from a friend suffering and battered by life’s winds. Through the glass “door” of our phones, we see their suffering, but our lives are worlds apart. What do we do? Sometimes, there isn’t much we can do besides send a message of comfort through the “glass door”. But how often could we open the door and step into their storm to help them? Maybe it’s bringing a meal. Perhaps it’s just sitting with them. Maybe it’s a helping hand. Whatever it is, entering into their storm is where love and compassion are genuinely shown. Jesus is the ultimate example, who, seeing our enslavement to sin and its impact on our lives, “took up our pain and bore our suffering…he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:3-5).
