“Hey, lazy! Yes, you. You need to wise up!” This isn’t something we would respond well to. Yet it’s the straight talk King Solomon uses. “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!” (Proverbs 6:6). What does the ant teach us? They are hard workers, always preparing. They work together and care for the whole family. ”It stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest” (Proverbs 6:8). And me? “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3:23). However, this isn’t the ant lesson. The lesson lies between verses 6 and 8 – “It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,” (Proverbs 6:7). The ant does all this good without any external motivator. Its internal instinct drives it to live this life. It’s the same wisdom we need. No external motivation will empower us to live like this. It’s only when our desire to serve God is internal, a divine instinct, that we can live this calling. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13). “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life” (2 Peter 1:3).
