I had never expected I’d have lunch with the king when I awoke that morning. It was graduation day for the students of our training school. At the last minute we heard that King Goodwill Zwelithini, the Zulu king, was coming because, unbeknown to us, his wife was one of the graduates. After a lot of fanfare heralding his arrival, the graduation took place. Afterwards we followed his cavalcade to a hotel where we had lunch with him. We had a wonderful conversation with him, like we were chatting with an old friend. Yet he was a king who demanded respect. At one stage there was a phone call, and the person bringing the phone to the king prostrated himself on the ground as he carried it. It struck me that this mix of approachability and power is a glimpse into what Jesus offers. He is the “King of all kings and Lord of all lords” (Revelation 19:16). However, despite his awesome rank and power, he invites us into the closest relationship possible. “You are my friends if you do what I command” (John 15:14). What an offer. You’re invited to lunch with The King, to chat, to laugh, to share your fears and joys. Today, sit with The King and enjoy a conversation with Him. (Craig B).
