We can be confused about many things in our walk as God’s children. But if the thing I seek most is to experience the gift of God’s eternal life, what should I do? Jesus made it very clear what is required for eternal life. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3). Eternal life is found in knowing God and Jesus. This is not simply academic knowing but the deep knowing found in relationship. Think about those you know best – husband, wife, friends. What do you do to develop this relationship? You regularly talk to them. You enjoy meals together. You read all their messages to you. You spend time with them and your common friends. Doing this is exactly what knowing God requires. “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42). Knowing God is developed in always reading his Word, enjoying time with believers, sharing communion with Jesus, and speaking to God in prayer. It’s what we naturally do with those we love, and it brings us great joy. Doing this with God and Jesus will bring us great joy and eternal life.
